The whole thing is kind of a tough scenario but here's how I look at it...
As a pure fan I would love to see him accept and go on.. As it looks like he will.. Ever since the original dream team, US Men's Basketball has been somewhat boring to watch and I'd definitely have reason to watch with him there. Both for general fan reasons of wanting to see one of "my" players in the Olympics and for the extra chance to see him play some ball and see how he's developing.
As a Cavs fan... The debate is of course more difficult. Will he really gain much by playing for the U.S. Team... A team that's been characterizd by disappointment and selfish play, etc.. Plus you have the injury risk.. And could he stand better to hang around at home and work more specifically on his own game (jump shot, jump shot, jump shot) than to be worrying about winning a gold medal?
In all, I think it's an opportunity he shouldn't pass up. Playing with some other guys, a chance to establish himself as a player to be recognized and feared as a player and a leader, rather than just a suyper-hyped prep-to-pro phenom, in advance of just his second season. Plus practicing with some of the best the NBA has to offer can't hurt either. I think it can do a world of good.
I know there's a lot of great players and the below article mentioned Lamar Odom and Kenyon Martin as potential replacements for Shaq if he bows out.. Sure I'm a homer but adding Carlos Boozer would do wonders I think for the U.S. team. They seem too often to focus getting a bunch of stars but never workhorse type players like Booz.

While you make good points Matches the only thing I would add would be that he can get injured just as easy staying home working out (on that jump shot! ;D) as he could playing in live action. I wish him the best and hope they bring the gold back to the states!!
